THE ART OF HUNTING BIG GAME IN NORTH AMERICA

"This is a book about every aspect of big-game hunting as is it practiced on this continent today [1967]. It begins by tracing the origin of North America's game animals and explaining how, through adaptation, they evolved into the game we hunt now in various types of terrain. The author examines in much detail the senses of these animals, compares them with man's, and shows how the hunter can use this knowledge to his advantage.

All the traditional hunting techniques, and their history, are fully covered in this book: still hunting, stalking, driving, calling, use of dogs, and there are chapters on tracking, hunting the hills and the woods. Unique illustrations show how to 'work' a mountain, how to get game to move. And there is advice on following wounded game by identifying blood signs and tracks. 

How these techniques are applied to hunting different game animals forms the middle part of the book, with chapters on deer, wild sheep, grizzly, caribou, elk, moose, and antelope - all heightened by vividly told anecdotes from the author's own field experiences. Here, too, drawings illustrate the sites of O'Connor's stalks for wild sheep and elk. American buffalo: in search of a lost icon

"A hunt for the American buffalo—an adventurous, fascinating examination of an animal that has haunted the American imagination.

In 2005, Steven Rinella won a lottery permit to hunt for a wild buffalo, or American bison, in the Alaskan wilderness. Despite the odds—there’s only a 2 percent chance of drawing the permit, and fewer than 20 percent of those hunters are successful—Rinella managed to kill a buffalo on a snow-covered mountainside and then raft the meat back to civilization while being trailed by grizzly bears and suffering from hypothermia. Throughout these adventures, Rinella found himself contemplating his own place among the 14,000 years’ worth of buffalo hunters in North America, as well as the buffalo’s place in the American experience.
